Influential Democratic group backs Bonamici

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — State Sen. Suzanne Bonamici has picked up support from an influential Democratic group in her bid to replace former Oregon Congressman David Wu.

Emily’s List, a Washington-based political group that helps elect Democratic women who support abortion rights, announced Thursday that it will back Bonamici. An Emily’s List endorsement often gives candidates a significant boost in fundraising from the group’s network of donors.

Bonamici faces Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian and state Rep. Brad Witt in a Democratic primary to represent Oregon’s 1st Congressional District. The seat became vacant when Wu, a Democrat, stepped down this month following published allegations that he had an inappropriate sexual relationship with an 18-year-old woman.

The special primary election will be Nov. 8.
