PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Oregon Public Health officials think they’ll be able to prove deer droppings in a Washington County strawberry field caused the E. coli outbreak that killed one person and sicked 14 others.
Epidemiologist William Keene said Thursday that 10 percent of the samples taken from the Jaquith Strawberry Farm tested positive for the bacteria. Scientists are testing more than 100 samples of soil, strawberries and deer droppings found in the field.
The Oregonian reports (http://bit.ly/oEyodG) the lab has yet to confirm a match in the specific strain of E. coli bacteria.
