CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Texas Gov. Rick Perry is opening a second front in the battle for the Republican presidential nomination.
Perry’s trip to South Carolina to declare his candidacy for the GOP presidential nod draws attention from the Iowa Straw Poll and jolts the field of candidates already competing.
Perry planned the announcement at the RedState Gathering of conservative activists in Charleston, though it’s largely a formality since his top advisers signaled earlier this week he would use the appearance to make his plans official.
