NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Former Long Island University basketball star Sherman White, who served jail time for his role in a 1950s point-shaving scandal, has died at 82.

White’s widow said Friday he died of congestive heart failure on Aug. 4 at his home in Piscataway, N.J.

The 6-foot-8 White was one of the nation’s best players while at LIU in the late 1940s, and led the nation in scoring in 1951.

He seemed destined for a successful NBA career before he was arrested, along with two teammates, for taking money to fix the outcome of games.

White served about eight months in jail and was barred from the NBA.

He went on to work for a liquor distributor in northern New Jersey and mentored youth in Newark and in his hometown of Englewood.
