LONDON (AP) — British sea rescue workers say that 21 people were rescued after their U.S.-registered racing yacht capsized off the Irish coast.
The Press Association news agency says the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s Kiern Cotter reports that 16 people were picked off the hull of the 100-foot (160-meter)-long vessel while the rest were picked up out of the water.
One of the women has since been airlifted to the hospital.
Cotter said Monday that the boat’s keel broke shortly after it passed Fastnet Rock, a lighthouse built on a chunk of land at Ireland’s southwestern tip.
The boat was one of 314 vessels taking part in the Rolex Fastnet Race, which set sail from the Isle of Wight on Sunday.
