Battle Ground — Calling his 16 years on the Battle Ground school board “an amazing experience,” Sam Kim received thanks and admiration Aug. 4 for his service to a generation of students, school district employees and the public. Kim stepped down from the board earlier this year.

Mavis Nickels, a retired Prairie High School teacher, was appointed to fill the remainder of Kim’s term, which ends this year.

Kim spoke glowingly about his experience on the board, even during tough times, and praised the district’s operation and culture under Superintendent Shonny Bria. Board member John Idsinga read aloud a stirring tribute to Kim from board President Steve Pagel, who was not at the meeting. The tribute thanked Kim for his service to the students, employees and the district as a whole and praised him as an inspiration to newer board members.
