CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — The Willamette Valley wheat harvest is in full swing following a slow, damp start.
Cold and wet weather this year has delayed grass seed and wheat crops. But farmers say it has also led to higher-than-usual yields from wheat.
Oregon State University field crop specialist Mark Mellbye (MELL’-bee) tells the Corvallis Gazette-Times that Oregon farmers planted a large amount of wheat this year, perhaps as much as 220,000 acres in the Willamette Valley alone.
Farmers have turned to wheat as prices for grass seed have fallen.
