OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The founder and majority owner of the United Football League says he has confidence in the leadership of Michael Huyghue after the commissioner was alleged to have provided extra benefits to University of Miami football players when he was a sports agent.
Bill Hambrecht said in a statement Wednesday that he and other UFL owners support Huyghue’s “denial of these specious claims.”
In a Yahoo Sports report, former Miami booster and convicted Ponzi schemer Nevin Shapiro alleges Huyghue provided cash and benefits to Miami players to induce them to become clients. Shapiro was an investor in Huyghue’s agency.
Huyghue has denied that Shapiro had any role in his company, which was in business from 2001-08.
