LEAVENWORTH, Wash. (AP) — Washington state highway officials have closed a 15-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 2 in northcentral Washington overnight because of a fire in Tumwater Canyon near Leavenworth. A detour is available. That closure began Wednesday afternoon.

The State Patrol said late Wednesday night the fire had burned across about 50 acres. It was reported burning in a mixture of grass, shrubs and trees.

In rural Mason County in Western Washington, the state Department of Natural Resources and other crews are battling a wildfire that burned more than 50 acres Wednesday.

The cause of the fires is under investigation.
