ALBANY, Ore. (AP) — Oregon’s Calapooia River will soon be free of man-made impediments once the removal of a 40-foot wide dam is completed.

The Albany Democrat-Herald reports (http://bit.ly/qZYzyv ) the removal of the Shearer Dam will complete a process started in 2007.

The $1.1 million project will include the installation of a series of wells to provide water for a historical demonstration.

Water is about 4 feet deep in the summer, but can increase to more than 12 feet in the winter.

Area residents complain that the dam removal will cause more flooding.

The Calapooia is driven by rain water rather than snow melt. It starts at about 5,200 feet on Tidbits Mountain east of Holley.
