SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Western Oregon University’s organic campus garden has taken root.
The 100-by-50-foot plot is flourishing, with guidance from a communications adviser and the hard work of students. The garden produces cauliflower, cabbage, squash and lettuce for a student food pantry.
The Salem Statesman Journal reports (http://bit.ly/qQxwSG ) the garden had its first summer harvest in August, and expects a second harvest next week.
The Western Oregon food pantry will offer the organic vegetables to those who request it on campus.
The project has also inspired projects involving organic gardening. Some envision the garden as an aid to science classes, design projects and comparative studies involving insects, plants or soil.
