SAO PAULO (AP) — Officials say Brazil’s military regime opened a file on soccer great Pele in 1970.

Veronica Cristo, a spokeswoman for the Sao Paulo State Public Archives, says the thin file with Pele’s name on it was opened by police after a man gave him a document calling for the release of political prisoners.

She says the file only contained a description of the encounter and some news clippings on games played by Pele.

Cristo says there is nothing in the file indicating Pele was investigated for links to leftist groups during the 1964-1985 military regime.

The files found in the port city of Santos are being made available to the public this week.
