GLENEAGLES, Scotland (AP) — Europe isn’t lacking potential captains for the Ryder Cup, and it appears popular Irishman Paul McGinley is the top candidate for the role in 2014 at Gleneagles.

This week, McGinley was reappointed as Britain & Ireland captain for next month’s Vivendi Seve Trophy against Continental Europe in Paris. It likely will help his chances for the Ryder Cup captaincy in three years.

If that happens, Scottish pair Paul Lawrie and Colin Montgomerie — two veterans of the European circuit — would welcome the appointment.

Lawrie says “it seems they’re putting Paul strongly in a position to be the captain, which I think’s a good move.”

McGinley was vice captain of Europe’s winning team in 2010.
