RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) — Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has received a $1.9 million grant to aid research into improving carbon capture and storage systems at coal-fired power plants.

The U.S. Department of Energy announced funding for the project and 15 others nationally on Thursday. The projects together are valued at $41 million over three years.

The PNNL project investigates new organic-based solvents that could be used to capture carbon dioxide emissions from power plants.

The national laboratory’s research areas include science and environment, energy, defense and national security. The laboratory is managed and operated by Battelle Memorial Institute, a nonprofit group based in Columbus, Ohio.
