OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The president of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will speak in the Omaha area about the importance of volunteering.

Jeff Raikes grew up in Ashland, Neb., before working his way up to an executive position at Microsoft during a career that spanned more than 25 years. Then in 2008, he came out of retirement to lead the world’s largest charitable foundation.

The Gates Foundation is distributing billions of dollars that Bill Gates accumulated as co-founder of Microsoft and a significant chunk of Omaha billionaire Warren Buffett’s fortune.

Raikes will speak at a Metro Rotary Luncheon on Sept. 16 at the Embassy Suites in La Vista.

During the event, Omaha’s 12 area Rotary clubs will announce a joint project they say could save hundreds of lives every year.
