BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Members of Colombia’s national soccer team finally made it to the U.S. for two exhibition games after being delayed by Tropical Storm Irene.
Interim coach Leonel Alvarez, coaching staff and three players had to spend an extra day in Bogota because their flights were rescheduled to Monday.
Colombia plays Honduras in New Jersey on Saturday and Jamaica in Washington on Sept. 6.
Foreign-based players in Europe, Mexico and Argentina also had to postpone their arrivals in the U.S. because of the storm.
One player who won’t be coming is captain Mario Yepes. He withdrew from the squad at the request of his club, AC Milan. The Italian team says the defender is not fit enough to play in the games.
