BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) — Florida Atlantic’s baseball players, coaches and staff have shaved their heads to support the cancer-stricken brother of a teammate.

Pitcher Jake Meiers’ brother, Cody, was recently diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare bone cancer. FAU coach John McCormack suggested the head-shaving idea, and his players did not hesitate.

“It definitely means a lot to my brother,” Jake Meiers said. “When he first walked in he got a huge smile and it hasn’t left. … It’s awesome.”

Ewing’s Sarcoma is the same form of cancer Mark Herzlich battled when he was playing linebacker at Boston College, forcing him out for a year. Herzlich returned for his senior season and signed this year as a free agent with the New York Giants.
