MOUNT VERNON, Wash. (AP) — An employee at the Skagit County Treasurer’s Office is on paid leave while the Mount Vernon Police Department investigates a possible theft of property tax payments.

The Skagit Valley Herald reports (http://ow.ly/7MUoD ) that Treasurer Katie Jungquist says about $5,000 could be missing. She said she noticed a discrepancy between receipts and deposits for property tax payments on Tuesday and immediately began an internal review.

The police department says the employee appeared to have been taking public funds for personal use.

Investigators are looking into how long the thefts may have been taking place.
