No. 24 Delaware women defeat William & Mary

NEWARK, Del. (AP) — Elena Delle Donne had 23 points, nine rebounds and five assists to help No. 24 Delaware beat William & Mary 73-57 in the Colonial Athletic Association opener on Sunday.

The Blue Hens (6-0, 1-0 CAA) are off to their best start ever.

Delle Donne, who entered the contest as the country’s leading scorer at 30.3 points per game, hit 8-of-15 shots from the floor, including three 3-pointers.

The victory was the Hens’ sixth straight over the Tribe (4-3, 0-1) and ninth in the last 11 meetings.

Delaware never trailed after scoring the first eight points of the game. The Hens led by as many as 26 points in the first half before going into intermission with a 44-19 advantage.

In the second half, William & Mary cut Delaware’s lead to 16 on Janine Aldridge’s 3-pointer with 1:10 remaining. Aldridge, who hit five 3-pointers, finished with a team-high 17 points.
