PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Richard Lariviere had captured the imagination of the University of Oregon community. But that didn’t stop the new president from attracting the displeasure of the governor and the State Board of Higher Education.
On Monday, the board voted unanimously to fire Lariviere.
The Oregonian (http://bit.ly/w4qie9 ) reports that as Lariviere gained appreciation in the community, the state board grew increasingly unhappy with him.
The final straw was his effort to raise salaries for more than a thousand faculty and administrators after the governor asked all seven state universities to keep increases under 6 percent. This was not the first time the university president had ignored his bosses.
He was criticized for allowing classified employees to work overtime to offset losses in pay from furlough days.
