LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Former FIFA presidential candidate Mohamed bin Hammam will have his appeal heard Jan. 23 by the top court in international sports.

This is the first of two appeal cases following a bribery scandal that will go before the Court of Arbitration of Sport.

Bin Hammam led the Asian Football Confederation since 2002. He wants to stop the AFC from appointing an interim president while he fights his life ban imposed by FIFA.

Chinese official Zhang Jilong has taken charge of the Asian governing body and bin Hammam’s vacated seat on FIFA’s executive committee. CAS previously rejected bin Hammam’s request for an injunction blocking Zhang’s appointment.

Bin Hammam also asked CAS last month to overturn his FIFA ban. No hearing date was set.
