BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) — Carl Pelini is the new football coach at Florida Atlantic.

The university’s trustees approved a 5-year contract that would be worth $2.49 million in base salary on Monday. The former Nebraska defensive coordinator replaces Howard Schnellenberger, who coached his last game before retirement over the weekend.

Pelini is the brother of Nebraska coach Bo Pelini. Carl Pelini spent four years at Nebraska on his brother’s staff, and his only previous head-coaching experience is at the high school level.

FAU finished this season 1-11, tied with three other schools for the worst record in major college football.

Schnellenberger had been the only coach in the history of the program. He urged FAU’s players over the weekend to help the incoming coaching staff make a smooth transition.
