KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The office of Afghan President Hamid Karzai says that he has returned to the capital to visit with the scores of wounded and the bereaved families of those killed in an unprecedented sectarian assault on a Shiite shrine in the capital.

Karzai’s office said Wednesday that he cut short an official trip to Germany and Britain because of Tuesday’s blast, which killed 56 Shiite worshippers and wounded more than 160 others outside a shrine where hundreds had gathered to celebrate the holiday of Ashoura.

The day honors the death of Imam Hussein, a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, in 680 A.D.
