Talking Points: Not a time to whine

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

Boise State football coach Chris Petersen is the latest to sound off on the BCS, saying Monday that “everybody is tired” of the system and “the whole thing needs to be changed.” It’s no coincidence that this rant came after it was announced that the Broncos will not be playing in a BCS bowl.

Well, Alabama’s probably happy.

Petersen’s statements reflects what much of the country thinks, and he’s probably right.

Thing is, coaches need to realize that their credibility on an issue wanes to almost non-existence when they complain only after they feel wronged. If someone such as Les Miles — coach of the No. 1 ranked LSU Tigers — were to make similar remarks, they would carry a lot more weight. Otherwise, it just sounds like someone who didn’t get his way.

The Chargers may have nabbed a victory Monday night, but the past few years haven’t felt the least bit victorious. Remember when the Bolts were so-called Super Bowl contenders before virtually every season? And yet, year after year they have frittered away their opportunities despite overwhelming talent.

The big mistake was firing Marty Schottenheimer after a 14-2 season in 2006. Granted, Schottenheimer’s team have a history of underperforming in the playoffs, and he had a strained relationship with management.

But still … 14-2?

Norv Turner never was able to turn the ship around in San Diego, and now — in terms of the Chargers’ Super Bowl window — it appears the ship has sailed.
