SEATTLE (AP) — A Corvallis, Ore., man accused of trying to illegally export military grade rifle scopes has been charged with attempting to violate the Arms Export Control Act.
U.S. Attorney Jenny Durkan of Seattle said Geoffrey Roose was arrested Tuesday.
She says he drew law enforcement attention after listing several restricted, military-grade rifle scopes on eBay.
According to court documents, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent learned that Roose had sold export-restricted rifle scopes overseas without a required export license. When the investigator sent Roose an email advising him that the scopes were restricted for export, prosecutors say the agent received a reply that said only, “Thanks.”
The federal complaint alleges Roose continued to offer the items on eBay. When an agent working undercover purchased one and asked that it be shipped to Europe, prosecutors say Roose shipped it. The scope was seized by law enforcement before it left the United States.
It was not immediately known whether Roose had a lawyer.
