PORT GAMBLE, Wash. (AP) — A grant from the Department of Defense is enabling the Northwest Indian College to offer more science classes. The grant also enables students interested in native environmental science to take the necessary courses close to home.

Students at the college’s Port Gamble campus now have the equipment they need to pursue their studies in environmental college.

The more than $350,000 grant from the federal government paid for supplies and plumbing to make a classroom ready for science.

Now students don’t have to travel to Bellingham or the Lummi Indian Reservation to take advanced science classes.

Sixty-five students are enrolled in the college’s Port Gamble campus. College officials say the addition of the science lab has prompted a number of students to change their educational direction to native environmental science.
