PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The wife of former U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy of Rhode Island is expecting a baby.

The son of the late Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts tells The Associated Press that he and wife Amy Petitgout (PET’-ah-goo) are thrilled with the prospect of expanding their family. He says the baby is due in the spring, and they’re waiting to find out the sex.

The former eight-term congressman decided not to seek re-election and left office in January.

He married Petitgout in July at the Kennedy family compound on Cape Cod. Petitgout is a middle school teacher from Brigantine, N.J., and has a young daughter from a previous marriage.

Kennedy is a visiting fellow at Brown University and has campaigned to boost brain research. His father died from brain cancer in 2009.
