Regarding the U.S. Postal Service’s planned cuts in services, there are several ways to save money. One is to charge these hundreds or thousands of charities that send out all these requests for money the full rate for postage that the rest of us have to pay. I must receive hundreds or more requests per year; sometimes 10 in one day. I started giving to about 10 charities, and I suspect those charities must sell or give names and addresses to other charities until the mailbox is stuffed.
Another way to save $5.5 billion a year might take a postal service bankruptcy and reorganization and change in union contract, such as the paying of health benefits to retired postal employees. Why should a company have to pay health insurance to a retired person anyway?
I hate to see the large number of post office closures planned with the number of layoffs anticipated in this time of excessive unemployment with no end in sight.
I do not think it is necessary that 42 percent of the first-class mail be delivered the following day. Five-day mail delivery and higher cost of first-class postage should be good starting points to solve the postal service’s problems.
