Gov. Chris Gregoire appointed a seven-member board of directors Tuesday to administer a scholarship program for middle-class families.

State Rep. Tim Probst, D-Vancouver, established the scholarship program through a bill passed earlier this year. The program is paid for through a public-private partnership and creates thousands of scholarships for students studying for a bachelor’s degree in high-demand fields. Students from a family of four that earns $98,000 or less annually would be eligible to apply for the scholarship. The scholarships are funded through $5 million from the state and $55 million from Boeing and Microsoft.

Board members are Jim Albaugh, CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes; Brad Smith, general counsel for Microsoft Corp.; Mack Hogans, senior executive at Weyerhaeuser Co.; Kimberly Harris, CEO of Puget Sound Energy; Theresa Gillespie, partner at Trilogy International Partners wireless communications investment company; Jim Sinegal, CEO of Costco Wholesale Corp.; and Jerry Grinstein, former CEO of Delta Air Lines.
