Letter: Voting your conscience is brave

I want to thank Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, for her courageous vote on the payroll tax holiday and extension of unemployment benefits taken in the House recently. She put partisan politics aside in voting against the many members of own her party and showed that she is willing to do right by the American people. I am a dyed-in-the-wool Democrat, yet I appreciate her brave action.

For much, much too long, Congress has been mired in crippling gridlock, but she showed that, when push comes to shove, she is willing to stand up and do the right thing. Congress needs more brave legislators like her who will do the right thing regardless of party affiliation. While I don’t agree with Herrera Beutler on much, she has honored herself with this brave action, which only six other House Republicans were willing to even consider on behalf of struggling Americans this holiday season. (The House switched course on this debate and approved the extension last week.)
