EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Oregonians worried about the impact of closing regional mail-processing centers are telling the U.S. Postal Service they’re worried about the impact on people who rely on mail-order prescriptions, small businesses that need prompt delivery, and the Oregon system of mail-in ballots.
Nurse Libby Bottero said at a hearing Wednesday night in Eugene that the impact of paring the postal system will fall most heavily on the poorest and neediest, people who rely on postal delivery of medications, for example.
The Postal Service has lost money and is considering closing 252 processing centers. In Oregon, that would mean closing centers in Springfield, Salem, Bend and Pendleton. Centers in Portland and Medford would remain open.
Twenty-six rural post offices also are on the chopping block.
