Utah Valley edges Hampton 42-40

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — Keith Thompson collected an offensive rebound off a blocked shot and hit the game-winning jumper with 5 seconds left to lead Utah Valley over Hampton 42-40 Thursday.

Jasper Williams made two of his three free throws for Hampton with 25 seconds left to give the Pirates a 40-39 lead. Ben Aird then made his first free throw, and missed the second.

Alfonzo Hubbard grabbed the offensive rebound, and had his ensuing shot blocked by David Bruce. However, it landed in the hands of Thompson.

Geddes Robinson grabbed 13 boards for Utah Valley in the Dr. Pepper Classic game. The Wolverines (7-8) outrebounded the Pirates 49-37.

Utah Valley shot 24.6 percent from the field (15 of 61), while Hampton made 29.4 percent (15 of 51). The Pirates (4-9), led by Mike Tuitt’s 11 points, were better from the field, despite making just 5.3 percent from 3-point range (1 of 19).
