UPDATE: Woman who jumped from I-205 bridge is dead

A woman who jumped from the Interstate 205 Bridge died Friday at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center after a rapid rescue by operators of a Port of Portland rescue boat and others.

Ana R. Ramos, 30, of Vancouver died a few hours after being taken to the medical center, said Trooper Ryan Tanner, a regional spokesman for the Washington State Patrol, which is investigating the case. Her family members have been notified. She was believed to have jumped alone.

Authorities were alerted at 1:12 p.m. that a young woman had been seen parking her car on the bridge and jumping from the highest stretch of the southbound part of the bridge.

Multiple callers reported the incident to 911 dispatchers, who sent a Port of Portland rescue boat that’s stationed nearby on the Oregon side of the Columbia River. At least one caller was able to help responders track the woman as she floated west.

“It’s amazingly difficult to locate people out there,” said Tanner.

The rescue boat’s crew found the woman and delivered her to a private dock on the Washington side, with the owner’s permission, an official said. Once on shore in Vancouver, firefighters and paramedics with AMR Northwest ambulance service carried her to a waiting ambulance.

Witnesses said medics were performing CPR during the rescue attempt.

“They did everything they could,” said Capt. Scott Willis with the Vancouver Fire Department.

Tanner said, “We’re still investigating the circumstances surrounding why she jumped off the bridge.”

The Clark County Medical Examiner has not yet determined the cause and manner of Ramos’ death.
