TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — A former Tacoma high school teacher has been charged with having sex with a teenager she taught at Tacoma’s Mount Tahoma High School.

The News-Tribune reports 38-year-old Veronica Chantel Dawkins has been charged with eight counts of first-degree sexual misconduct with a minor. Piece County prosecutors say she will arraigned on Friday in Piece County Superior Court.

Dawkins taught English at Mount Tahoma until last week when school officials learned of the allegations against her. Tacoma Public Schools spokesman Dan Voelpel says Dawkins was placed on administrative leave Thursday and resigned Tuesday.

Court records say the 18-year-old student told investigators he and Dawkins began a consensual sexual relationship in December.

It is illegal in Washington for a teacher to have sex with a student, even if the student is of the age of consent.
