South African through to 1st ATP semifinal

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — South African wildcard Izak van der Merwe defeat Simon Greul of Germany 7-6 (5), 6-2 Friday at the SA Tennis Open to reach his first ATP semifinal.

The 170th-ranked Van der Merwe broke his opponent twice in the second set to win at Montecasino.

South Africa has a chance of getting three players into the semifinals. Rik de Voest and fourth-seeded Kevin Anderson also play in the quarterfinals on Friday.

De Voest faces Somdev Devvarman of India. Anderson meets Karol Beck of Slovakia.
