SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — A neighborhood group in Spokane plans to hold a fundraiser to help children pay off overdue book fines so they can resume using their library.

The Spokesman-Review reports 2,300 library cards are blocked at the East Side Library Branch. A card is blocked if there’s more than a $10 fine.

The library at the East Central Community Center was threatened with closure last year, partly because it has one of the lowest usage rates in the city.

Jennifer Hansen of the Neighborhood Matters community development program asked the South Perry Business and Neighborhood Association to raise money to help pay off children’s fines and save the library.
