TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Ex-Tacoma high school teacher Veronica Chantel Dawkins pleaded not guilty Friday to charges of sexual misconduct.

The 38-year-old is accused of having a sexual relationship since December with an 18-year-old student.

KOMO reports she was released without bail and ordered to have no contact with the student.

It is illegal in Washington for a teacher to have sex with a student, even if the student is of the age of consent.

Until last week, Dawkins taught English at Mount Tahoma High School. She resigned Tuesday.
