PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Federal prosecutors are asking their state-level counterparts and law enforcement agencies in Oregon counties to help keep guns out of the hands of abusers in domestic violence cases.
Their request came at a Portland meeting Friday, just as Portland police were investigating a murder-suicide involving a man and his girlfriend.
The Oregonian newspaper quotes U.S. Attorney Dwight Holton as citing the case as an example of the rising number of deaths from guns in domestic violence.
It’s a federal crime for people convicted of certain state domestic violence misdemeanors to possess a gun or ammunition, but federal prosecutors in Oregon don’t routinely file charges in those cases.
