BOSTON (AP) — American Russell Brown had a personal-best time of 3 minutes, 54.81 seconds to win the men’s mile at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix on Saturday.

Brown, a native of Hanover, N.H. and a 2008 graduate of Stanford, had run on the fast track at the Reggie Lewis Center five times as an amateur. He beat a field that included defending champ and Olympic silver medalist Nick Willis, who finished third, and American record-holder Alan Webb, who faded to seventh.

Marina Muncan of Serbia won the women’s race, edging Canada’s Carmen Douma-Hussar with a final lunge at the finish in 4:34.46 as Douma-Hussar fell shortly after the finish.
