ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Andre Jones scored 11 points and had a steal and a free throw in the last 30 seconds to help Winthrop defeat North Carolina-Asheville 57-53 on Saturday.

After UNC Asheville cut it to one, 50-49, on Chris Stephenson’s layup with a minute to play, the Bulldogs fouled Reggie Middleton with 46 seconds left. However, he missed both free throws. Jones then intercepted a Bulldogs’ pass to the post and, after he was fouled, made 1 of 2 free throws with 23 seconds left.

UNC Asheville had a chance to tie or take the lead but J.P. Primm committed an offensive foul with 11 seconds remaining.

The Eagles (11-12, 7-6 Big South Conference) then got a dunk from Matt Morgan and two free throws from Charles Corbin to seal it.

Corbin had 13 points and nine rebounds as Winthrop outrebounded UNC Asheville 40-29.

Primm had 16 points for the Bulldogs (12-11, 7-6), who had 18 turnovers.
