DOHA, Qatar (AP) — The International Cricket Council is satisfied that the bans imposed on three Pakistan cricketers found guilty of corruption will help restore integrity to the tainted sport.
Salman Butt was given a 10-year ban with five years suspended, Mohammad Asif a seven-year ban with two suspended, while Mohammad Amir was banned for five years after being found guilty of “spot-fixing” by an independent ICC tribunal on Saturday.
ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat said Sunday that the verdicts were not about undermining Pakistan or singling out its players ahead of the 2011 Cricket World Cup, which starts later this month.
Instead, Lorgat says it’s further proof that the ICC will not tolerate corruption in any form.
