JERUSALEM (AP) — Jerusalem’s City Hall says a key committee is pushing forward with plans to build a new Jewish housing project in an Arab neighborhood in east Jerusalem.

Thirteen apartments are to be built in Sheikh Jarrah, one of the most volatile neighborhoods in east Jerusalem. In the past, the U.S. has denounced such projects as an obstacle to Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking.

The Palestinians hope to establish a future capital in east Jerusalem.

City Hall spokesman Elie Isaacson says the municipal planning committee discussed the project on Monday. It will now seek public comment on the plan.

The plan must clear additional bureaucratic obstacles, and actual construction is far off. But even talk of altering the situation in east Jerusalem can be explosive.
