EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — Mourners are remembering slain Washington Correctional Officer Jayme Biendl at a public service Tuesday afternoon in Everett.
Gov. Chris Gregoire and Corrections Secretary Eldon Vail are among those speaking at the Comcast Arena. The ceremony includes the presentation of a flag to Biendl’s family, the playing of taps, and a final radio call.
Biendl was strangled Jan. 29 in the chapel of the prison at Monroe. Her suspected killer is Byron Scherf, a three-strikes offender serving a life term for rape convictions.
The 34-year-old Biendl grew up and lived in Granite Falls. She went to work at the Monroe Correctional Complex in 2002 and was correctional officer of the year in 2008.
