ISLAMABAD (AP) — The U.S. ambassador has pressed Pakistan’s president to release an American official Washington says was illegally detained after he fatally shot two men trying to rob him in the eastern city of Lahore.

The U.S. Embassy says Ambassador Cameron Munter delivered the message during a meeting with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday in Islamabad.

Pakistani presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar declined to comment on the details of the discussion.

The U.S. has said the American, identified by the Pakistanis as Raymond Allen Davis, has diplomatic immunity and should not have been held after he shot the two men on Jan. 27.
