EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — A jury in Eugene is set to begin hearing evidence on whether an Oregon woman should be sentenced to death or to life in prison for murdering her 15-year-old daughter.

The Register-Guard reports that 42-year-old Angela McAnulty pleaded guilty to aggravated murder in the 2009 abuse and torture death of Jeanette Maples on the day her trial began, immediately triggering the penalty phase to decide her sentence.

Her defense attorneys and two Lane County prosecutors spent a week interviewing nearly 100 potential jurors before a jury was selected.

Under Oregon law, the death penalty requires a unanimous decision by the jury.

The prosecution case is expected to last until next week, with the defense to follow.
