Psychiatrist: Kerrigan too drunk to talk to cops

WOBURN, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts psychiatrist says the brother of Olympic skater Nancy Kerrigan was “profoundly impaired” after drinking heavily and could not have knowingly waived his rights when making statements to police after his father died.

Mark Kerrigan has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter in the 2010 death of his 70-year-old father, Daniel Kerrigan. Prosecutors say Kerrigan died after a fight with his son, but the family says a heart condition caused his death.

Kerrigan’s lawyers are asking a judge to throw out his statements, arguing that he was too drunk to voluntarily waive his right to remain silent.

On Friday, the defense called Dr. John Fromson, a psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital who said Kerrigan was so drunk that he could not have knowingly waived his rights.
