SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Salem, Ore., police say a house fire they call suspicious claimed one life late Friday.

A section of Center Street was closed for several hours while authorities controlled the fire and began an investigation.

Police Lt. Dave Okada says the victim died at Salem Hospital. That person was not immediately identified pending notification of relatives.

Fire Battalion Chief Cord Von Derahe tells the Statesman Journal that firefighters found flames on the first floor when they arrived.

Salem firefighters are working with police detectives to determine the cause of the blaze. Lt. Steve Birr says police plan to serve a search warrant at the home Saturday.
