YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) — Yakima County Prosecuting Attorney Jim Hagarty says a Yakima police officer was justified in fatally shooting a man who was stabbing another man.

Officer Joel Hansen fired Jan. 30 when the attacker, Yueri Acevedo Cisneros, refused to stop stabbing a victim on the ground.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reports Hansen remains on paid leave, pending the police department’s review, which is expected to follow Thursday’s finding.

The stabbing victim, Julio Cesar Zamora-Cortes, was stabbed 159 times with a pocketknife and is recovering after surgery.
