LONDON (AP) — London organizers are marking a key milestone ahead of the 2012 Games, with the velodrome becoming the first venue in the Olympic Park to be completed.
The 6,000-seat, $152 million velodrome was being officially opened Tuesday, 17 months ahead of the London Games.
The facility was to be tested by members of the British team that clinched seven track cycling gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games.
A full test event is due to take place at the start of 2012.
The Manchester velodrome built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games is set to remain the base for British Cycling.
