MOUNT VERNON, Wash. (AP) — A man charged in the 2009 beating death of his 2-year-old niece has reached a plea agreement. The Skagit Valley Herald says Devin Deon Smith pleaded guilty Tuesday to second-degree manslaughter, first-degree assault of a child and reckless endangerment in Skagit County Superior Court. His trial was set for this week.

Lawyers on both sides recommended a 1212 year sentence. Smith is scheduled to be sentenced Friday.

He was originally charged with second-degree murder in the death of Sania Amarie Dupree.
